Ecological Restoration
Through ecological restoration the goal of the Natural Resource Unit is to reestablish native and functional plant and animal communities. Over the past decade hundreds of acres of native grassland prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna have been restored or enhanced. While the restoration process varies dependent on habitat type, the same general principles apply when restoring native habitats: identify soil, water, and sunlight conditions; review historical vegetative maps; develop strategy for establishment of native vegetation; and develop and implement a long term management plan. Through this process native plant and animal communities have been restored in many of Anoka County’s parks.
