Urban Forestry

forestry assesmentUrban forestry became a major concern during the 1970s with the widespread loss of elm trees due to Dutch elm disease.  Since that time great effort has been put forth across much of the United States to protect native trees in urban areas.  In Anoka County, Dutch elm disease, oak wilt, red pine decline, and numerous other diseases and ailments have taken their toll on our boulevards and within the forests.  Through active management Anoka County Parks has helped to slow the spread of many of these diseases helping to preserve the forest habitats.  Additionally non-native species have been introduced over the years such as common and glossy buckthorn, many varieties of honeysuckle, Siberian elm, garlic mustard, and numerous other invasive plant species.  Active management is needed to remove these invasive species and large scale restoration projects are the key to the future of our forests.
