Eastern Redbud Tree
The blossoms of redbuds look a lot like pea blossoms. The blossoms are also edible and early settlers used them as a welcome addition to their spring salads. The unopened blossoms can be pickled and used as a substitute for capers.Ponderosa Pine Tree
Most widely distributed pine species in the lower 48 states. Being not very cold hardy, it has never been documented naturalized in MN but some hardier genomes do exist and have been successfully planted. Its bark has a butterscotch/vanilla smell.Bald Eagle
Is the only eagle that lives exclusively in North America. A nest can be 4 to 6 feet across and 3 feet deep. Bald eagle populations declined due to the use of DDT, an insecticide that bioaccumulate in the food chain and causes egg shell thinning. After the United States and Canada banned DDT in the 1970s, their populations began to recover.Baltimore Oriole
Look for orioles in forested areas. Their nests are pendulous and are woven from grasses and other fibrous materials and hang from the tips of drooping branches.Snapping Turtle
Minnesota’s largest turtle. The largest known in MN weighed 65 lbs.! They are usually docile in the water but can be aggressive on land, lunging forward and “snapping” at its foe. -
